Lucrezia Borgia by JessiBeans Lucrezia Borgia by JessiBeans
So I like to read Wikipedia, or rather, fall into black holes of reading connected entries on a tangent so that I lose time... "researching."  The Borgias were one such tangent, maybe because the show was coming out? (I started this that long ago)  Maybe not... Lucrezia is much maligned by history.  She may have been a cold temptress, she was definitely the bastard daughter of Pope Alexander VI (scandalous!), and her story is interesting either way. More on her here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucrezia… That period in Italian history is one of my favorites, too.

This is Lucrezia imagined as a misfit Disney princess, a la Rapunzel.  I really wanted to paint gold hair with a crazy rim light and jello demon fairy things.  She has a companion piece, Joan the Mad, who may be done... some day. XD

This is based (kinda) on the only known painting of her as St. Catherine of Alexandria in a fresco by Pinturicchio, in the Sala dei Santi the Borgia apartments in the Vatican c. 1494: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia…

A Disney princess?

Maybe so.  But I won't be buying any Borgia soup from the concession stand outside the Borgia ride at Disney World.

Too spicy for my tastes.  :)

(What would they call it?  How about "Kiss My Arsenic"?)

Very good, however to me, I tend to see Lucrezia as more closer to being an ingenue than a femme fatale. In fact, it was her sister-in-law Sancia of Aragon, the princess of Squillace and wife of her(Lucrezia's) younger brother Jofre Borgia who was more like a femme fatale. She had affairs with Lucrezia and Jofre's older brothers Juan and Cesare, and she played a role in his downfall with her lover Prospero Colonna after the Pope died.

Well, Mother Goerthel would have DESERVED THAT princess! Excpe that Lucrezia wasn't that horrid, but, a good Borgia is still a Borgia in a bolgia.  Dante joke.  Nice expression!

"Cold Temptress" or childhood victim of the most powerful pedo in the world?
Didn't her father kill the man she tried to marry out a jealous rage or something? The whole family was seriously messed in the head.

Yes! Lucrezia is a fascinating historical character, at least to me. Jean Plaidy wrote two historical fiction books on her and after reading those I've become very interested in Lucrezia's life. Especially considering she was betrothed and married several times for her families ambitions. I recently had the chance to visit the Vatican and actually see the painting of her in the Borgia apartments.

That's how I "research" as well. I start off with good intentions and then, oh wow, I've been reading about the burrowing habits of groundhogs for 2 hours... what happened.
