Athena by JessiBeans Athena by JessiBeans
Part 4 of 6

Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, war, the arts, industry, justice and skill. She was the favorite child of Zeus. She had sprung fully grown out of her father's head.

Athena and her uncle Poseidon were both very fond of a certain city in Greece. Both of them claimed the city and it was decided that the one that could give the finest gift should have it. Leading a procession of citizens, the two gods mounted the Acropolis. Poseidon struck the side of the cliff with his trident and a spring welled up. The people marveled, but the water was as salty as Poseidon's sea and it was not very useful. Athena's gift was an olive tree, which was better because it not only gave the people food, but also oil and wood. Athena named her city Athens.

This is the fourth of a six piece portfolio for Independent Study in Digital Drawing, with piece examining a uniquely feminine trait as represented by a goddess. Athena represents wisdom.

dyk that ther's no such thing as a naturally black olive? they all grow green and then are turned black through a very long process involving large quantities of lye. just thought I'd let you know.

When people depict Athena, they tend to make her look wa too masculine. I love the way you've made her feminine and strong at the same time. It's wonderful. And I like the thick lines, it gives it a unique look that few are bold enough to pull off.

You did a great job blending the Ancient Greek portrayals of her with a more modern style. Speaking of style, I like the unique, nearly-stained glass look.

Athena's my favorite goddess. I've been fascinated since I studied Greece in school.

On another note, Thor from the Scandinavian mythology is pretty cool, but there's just something about goddesses that is unique and unmatched by other deities.

For some reason she doesn't seem as detailed as your other works.

bluehentrooper Featured By Owner May 6, 2007
Wow--that's a really wonderful depiction of Athena! She's my favorite of the Greek gods, and you captured her essence really well. The stained-glass feel of the piece is really interesting as well, and I think it echoes medieval Christian art in a way that is quite thought-provoking.

I hope that made some sense. :blushes:

A beautiful vision of Athena. I love the perspective, and the almost art-Nouveau quality of the lines and colouring is vibrant and wonderful.
pinkvinylangel Featured By Owner Mar 26, 2007
I love the sweeing lines of the dress and olive tree contrasted with the jaggedness of the rocks. What a beautiful metaphor for Athena and Athens...Great Job.
Jessica-Tanner Featured By Owner Mar 1, 2007
Oh I love mythology. The coloring on the dress is wonderful, it adds a great feel to picture, I like how it looks with the thicker lines on the outside and I love the perspective. Great job on everything! :)

Your coloring on this is fantastic. I especially love the softness of her gown (the shadows look great XD!) and the background...I don't know what it is about it, but I love the way you handled texture and composition.
