Part 1 of 6

Amaterasu was the Japanese Shinto Goddess of the sun and ruler of the Plain of Heaven, whose name means 'shining heaven' or 'she who shines in the heavens'. She is the eldest daughter of Izanagi. She was so bright and radiant that her parents sent her up the Celestial Ladder to heaven, where she has ruled ever since. The Japanese Imperial family claim to decend from her.

When her brother, the storm-god Susanowa, ravaged the earth she retreated to a cave because he was so noisy. She closed the cave with a large boulder. Her disappearance deprived the world of light and life. Demons ruled the earth. The other gods used everything in their power to lure her out, but to no avail. Finally it was Uzume who succeeded, performing comical and obscene dances, to the uproarious laughter of the other gods. Aroused by curiosity, Amaterasu peeked from her cave, a streak of light escaping, which we now call dawn. The goddess then saw her own brilliant reflection in a mirror which Uzume had hung in a nearby tree. When she drew closer for a better look, the gods grabbed her and pulled her out of the cave. She returned to the sky, and brought light back into the world.

This is the first of a six piece portfolio for Independent Study in Digital Drawing, with piece examining a uniquely feminine trait as represented by a goddess. Amaterasu represents vanity.

This is pretty. I'm into Japanese folklore so i found this.
gingertom84 Featured By Owner Jan 15, 2013  Professional Digital Artist
She was curious about the uproar of laughter alright but then the deities shouted they have found another sun goddess that is more beautiful than her and that the world does not need her anymore. Feeling outraged, she has to see the extraordinary beauty of her imaginary rival for herself, and lo and behold, it was only a reflection of herself – she immediately felt complimented and happy to be the diva that she is.

I have a question about okami and Omikami, if you say okami was copied then it means it is the same god? I mean Okami is the same that Okmikani right? Sure she's not a wolf?
TheHylain Featured By Owner Aug 18, 2012
okami means wolf(狼) or great god(大神) depending how you write it in japanese.
JessiBeans Featured By Owner Jun 14, 2012  Professional Digital Artist
I don't think I said Okami was copied - but I do love that game, and the Amaterasu in that game is the same in that she is the sun goddess, but most of my research doesn't necessarily say she has a wolf form. That may be an invention of the game designers and/or a particular version of her mythology that they ran with.

Is it okay if I use this for my World Religion Project? [Don't worry, my teacher makes us cite sources, otherwise we fail the assignment (weighted four times on our grade) and get reported for plagiarism.]

Amaterasu-Omikami is the original Sun-Goddess of Shinto. You know how video games usually copy the characters' names from mythological/religious people?

This piece has attributes of a stained - glass work & a painting. Someon else said it, but it was my thought as well. & there's a little of a woodcut / woodblock print influence, at least IMHO. Quite detailed
CaezarGrantz Featured By Owner Jan 6, 2011
simply amazing
Linuscat07 Featured By Owner Jan 1, 2011
A fascinating legend and so brilliantly illustrated. The bright, rich reds, oranges and yellows contrasted with her white face work beautifully. The goddess is lovely and one can easily imagine her as the Sun Goddess.

Your work is so beautiful. Sadly, I am disapointed in the development of your asian faces. Do you have difficulty? All of your other faces are so beautiful and well developed. I was shocked to see the difference in quality pertaining to this woman's face.

Well done!
VegaofTheBlackFlame Featured By Owner Nov 7, 2008
I always thought that Amaterasu hid in the cave for about forty years because her brothers, Tsukuyomi and Susanoo, the moon and storm gods, respectively, had said something insulting to her and when the world began to die without her light and warmth, they had their parents, Izanagi and Izanami, craft a beaded necklace, a mirror, and a third treasure (which I forget what it was) in order to coax her out of the cave. Of course, myths vary from person to person, so it doesn't really matter. What matters is that it's a great image and a great series.

It's nice to see a piece of Her August Majesty that isn't Okami fanart

(not that the game Okami is not fantastic; it just generates a lot of misconceptions about Shintoism)
JessiBeans Featured By Owner Aug 9, 2007  Professional Digital Artist
Indeed, though I am also obsessed with Okami... I was just obsessed with the goddess' story, first.

Thank you!
Prez-Liz Featured By Owner Jul 28, 2007
Heh. Vanity is "uniquely feminine." That's almost funny.

Seriously, though, it's a beautiful picture. Drop-dead gorgeous, in fact. I especially love the fascination in her face. It is vain, but there is a kind of innocence blended in as well, as she has no clue she is vain. This is definitely going on my wish list.
